The Painful Process of Trying to Make Money at Squidoo

Making money at Squidoo is painful. At least, for me it is. I work hard on updating lenses only to see them edged out of the top tier by excellent lenses made by other lensmasters. I worry about my income being reduced because I'm dependent on this income; it is my only income. Well... I also earn from AdSense, but Squidoo is helping me get by in this world.

Since the money is that important to me I work hard to maintain it. Every day. And I was so disappointed today to see that I've got three fewer lenses in the top tier than I did yesterday. As of right now I've got five top tier lenses. Only five. There are twenty-three lenses in tier two and 119 in tier three. There are 79 lenses that fall below the three payout tiers. That's a lot of work I did for nothing. Bear in mind that all 226 are updated to August 1 (that was yesterday) and there's nothing more I can do with updates to make them perform better. This is as good as it gets.

I'm happy because today not one lens ranks less than 200,000 ... the lowest is at 183,830 - so I'm glad I took the time in July to update all low-ranking lenses three times, but OMG ... they are so totally worthless and I wonder if I should just delete them.

Okay, my lenses are updated, but are they unique and useful? Apparently not enough of them are. The ideal useful lens would be attracting buying consumers. Some of my lenses do and I'm grateful for steady sales although I wish they were more voluminous. I feel like I'm obsessing now. Really I must get more work done on creating more lenses and promoting them. I think that's where I need to go with this now.

Instead I've chosen to make my first Zujava leaf. Squidoo is so congested with lensmasters now, it is getting crazy in there. Occasionally a new lensmaster will figure out how to get lenses into the top tier, edging out old borderline lenses. I've seen lots of my lenses edged out over the last year or two. At the same time I've got two top-100 lenses right now. They've been up there for a while. For a long time I didn't think I'd even have one. I know that they edged out someone else's lenses. I can't even imagine why.

Back to work. So much to do today! This next update I'll be checking on backlink scores and labels. I predict that future success at Squidoo will be very dependent on lens promotion.

Oh Linda, your disappointment and frustration really oozes from this post and I am so sorry you are feeling like this.

Yes, Squidoo can be a whole lot of work for nothing if we are dependent on Tier payments and over this year I have been working hard on trying to get more income from sales than Tier payments. This work is starting to pay off but it really is a hard slog. Diversifying is also a challenge because it is so much easier (it seems to me) to earn on Squidoo than it is elsewhere.

It is always going to be hard to rank in the Top Tiers on Squidoo, because of the limited amount of places when you look at how many new pages are being published each day and of course the imbalance created by activities promoted by Squidoo HQ. Add into that the number of high ranking lenses that should not even be allowed on there and it takes a very thick-skinned person to not feel demoralised by the injustice of it all.

I wish I had an answer for you that does not mean even more hard work, but I don't. All I know is that these days I focus on topics that I believe will convert to sales better, because although I am lucky that I don't rely on my online income, my family would struggle without it.

Good luck Linda and hang on in there :)
