For Those Who Write

It used to be that a short story wasn't very short. Take a look at a book of short stories by Poe, or Fitzgerald, or other classic short-story writers. Short? Hardly! But these days writers spare words and time spent reading by creating flash fiction stories that take about five minutes or less to read, and generally are about 1000 words or less. My favorite length for flash fiction is about 500 words, give or take a few hundred.

Here are my best flash fiction tips:

1. Choose a prompt or idea, and a main character, then start writing. What is your character doing? Where is your character? What is the character's motivation? Put all these together and you have the opening lines of your story.

2. Don't worry much about where the story is going. You probably won't know when you start writing. If you do - that's fine too. But don't let uncertainty about the plot stop you from doing the writing.

3. Accept that story writing involves magic. You will start your story not knowing the path or the outcome, but soon it all becomes clear and the story magically resolves itself, using you to record the details. Good work!

I love writing flash fiction, and do it often. Flash fiction writing is a great way to practice fiction writing skills.

Decluttering My WIP Collection

Just like last year at this time, I'm focused on decluttering my WIP collection. I read a tip on the SquidU forum. A lensmaster mentioned that she had a separate account only for storing WIP lenses because she didn't like seeing them cluttering up her main account.

A lightbulb turned on for me.

I hurried to Squidoo to create a new account. A WIP decluttering account. And it occurred to me I might use the same name as one of my lesser-known blogs, Declutter Diary.

Voila! A new Squidoo account was born! The Declutter Diary Squidoo account.

I transferred all my WIP lenses there from across four ($) !!!! other accounts. Yay, now I can see what my lensrank averages are. Finally!

But I couldn't resist making a few lenses for the new decluttering Squidoo account. Honestly. Couldn't. Help. It.

I love to write about decluttering. I could write about it all day long. This. Is. My. Life. LOL ...sorry to say...

One of the lenses was a WIP I had IN PROGRESS when I transferred all the WIPs... Top Ten Best Firewood Log Racks and Bins. A friend challenged me to create a "Best Firewood" lens many months ago on the Content Writers Forum. I try... but best firewood? Really? I know what's best around here because we heat our house with wood, but it was mind boggling to think of what might be best in other places around the world, so the lens was in WIP status for a long time. I hate when that happens!

So now it is done. I used it to feature firewood ORGANIZING racks and bins... kind of a keep-your-house-clean topic ... believe me, if you live in an area where the only heat is firewood in a woodstove, you would understand.

Rushing to increase my lens-holdings

I've become re-enthused about Squidoo after taking a break from making new lenses for most of this year. I was slightly burned out and needed something new to do. . . so I worked on my personal websites and got that work organized, time-wise, and under control. Feels so much better that way!

Now I'm back to my lens building activities. Older, wiser, and hopefully better prepared to make successful and worthy lenses! In the past few days I've made eight of them. The first one to come to mind is about making homemade castile soap. My significant other, dear partner Bob, wanted me to find the instructions so we can make some. And what better to do when you're researching something than to put all the results on a Squidoo lens. Wow. Now I know so much about soapmaking - both bar soaps and liquid castile soap. The main different there is the type of lye used... and the process of course.

I have a separate Squidoo account for writing about the Baha'i Faith. I'm sort of an on-the-fence Baha'i. I thought I quit the Faith ten years ago but a few weeks back I got a phone call from a woman who told me I'm still officially a member. They didn't accept my resignation! So anyhow, I do love to write about Baha'i as I was an active member 30 years and now an inactive member another 11 years. I know a lot about this religion!! To say the least!! So a couple days ago I wrote a lens about the Baha'i Greatest Name - Allah-u-Abha - and what it means.

Awesome cool. IMO

Then today I woke up early and was inspired to write about morning prayers. In particiular, the Baha'i morning prayers from our prayerbook. Along the way I said some prayers and found some new Baha'i songs on YouTube videos. Anyhow, I plan to create a lot more Baha'i lenses because the only other person making lenses for the Baha'i area is a woman who has no roots in the faith, and she's making very off-topic lenses about Christmas and Valentines Day - both of which are not holidays Baha'is even celebrate. Eeek. So I need to represent Baha'i more on Squidoo since I am one.

Next. . . I made a lens for my Geniyyah Squidoo account which is more woo-woo type spirituality. This lens is just to define spirituality. I thought that getting my definition of spirituality right might help me along my spiritual path. Thing is, it seems like everyone defines spirituality differently, and I had fun watching a lot of videos of people trying to define spirituality. I posted those on the lens. My personal definition is that spirituality is best demonstrated via creativity. I'm sort of an "Artists Way" kind of spiritual believer.

Gosh, there's more!

The next to come to mind is my new lenses about Christmas. OMG I think I'll just leave this for another posting. This one is getting so long. I do wish that Blogger.Com had a wordcount meter on the new-post page. That would be so helpful. Well, more later!

Squidoo For SEO

Squidoo has been recommended for SEO, but it is also a good community of many people who enjoy making Squidoo lenses in and of themselves. So when if you're a website owner planning to make Squidoo part of your SEO strategy, be aware that other lensmasters will expect quality when they see your lens.

You cannot put trash on the web at a site like Squidoo and expect it to prosper. It is true the front page of Squidoo has high PR, but your page won't unless the other lensmasters like it and promote it by favoriting it, giving it a thumbs up, and featuring it on their lenses. Your SEO strategy could fail by failing to respect Squidoo and the community of lensmasters that use it.

For example, within Squidoo there's an angel program. The angels have the power to boost your site's lensrank, or decrease it. I have been part of that angel program, and can verify that if a site is built sloppily just for the purpose of backlinking to another site, or promoting an affiliate link, such as one from Clickbank, it is likely to be demoted by an angel. Angels are looking for quality lenses made by lensmasters who write and design a lens in a way that it shows they care about Squidoo.

If you don't care about Squidoo for anything other than a quick backlink, your lens will show it, and it will not rank high. These lenses have no life or love put into them and sink as quickly as they are made.

To succeed at Squidoo, keep your lenses updated. Fill them with genuine valuable content that people will enjoy reading. Use them as more than just a link dump! Yes, Squidoo for SEO is a reasonable idea... and can help your websites prosper. But it is also a lively, vibrant community of people who dearly love and care about Squidoo.

Two Winners at the Tier One Challenge!

Today I want to congratulate the first two winners of the Tier One Challenge.

We started the Tier One Challenge on an auspicious day: 10-10-10, and only six days later on October 16, Lynn, known as eclecticeducation on Squidoo, woke up to find her challenge lens, File Folder Math, at lensrank #1,835! She's maintaining that nicely - as of today it has climbed a bit more, to #1,320.

Today we had our second winner! Lensmaster DinosaurEgg found out her challenge lens, Dinosaur Coloring Pages | Books | Games - Raah!, reached a wonderful tier one lensrank of #1,602!

The Tier One Challenge

A few days ago I sat reading the SquidU forum, when I was inspired to start a thread called the The Tier One Challenge. Basically, I challenged other lensmasters to participate in a "game" - to choose one lens that has never been in tier two - and to do everything possible to get it into tier one.

The thread has become quite popular and is a lot of fun to boot! CCGAL even made a lens for us: The Tier One Challenge.

The lens I chose to work on for this challenge was originally called "Horse Movies for Family Entertainment". I've done a lot of work on the lens this week, and even changed the name. Now it is Top 10 Horse Movies - Perfect Christmas Gifts!. The Christmasy parts of it will come off after December.

My on-page changes include: new title, new and improved text, and more product links, including a few Zazzle affiliate links.

My off-page changes include adding the page to Digg and Delicious, and writing a backup article at Gather.Com: Movie Review: The Silver Stallion, aka: The Silver Brumby. Also, I made another horse lens - using the Best Ever template site: Top Ten Gifts For Children Who Love Horses.

I plan to do a lot more article writing to promote this lens.

Plenty of improvement, first time in tier two, and nearing tier one!

That's the good news. The bad news... is that most of that improvement comes from lensmasters who found the SquidU thread, joined the project, and visited my site.

What I really need is search engine traffic - that's what's lacking.

A few days ago this lens was #139 at Google for keyword, "horse movies". Today it is #63 - a HUGE improvement... but still, not enough to bring in heavy search engine traffic.

I will keep trying... and believe that an intense backlinking strategy through the writing of on-topic quality articles on a variety of websites will be my best bet for success with this lens.

Squidoo Bloggers - Please Identify Yourselves!

How many times have you gone to a Squidoo-themed blog and had a hard time figuring out which lensmaster posted the information?

It happens to me, way too often. I find it helpful to know who is talking before I start reading a blog post. I'd love it if everyone would post something about themselves - their Squidoo ID, their photo, in the side column of their blog, or at the top.

The reason? CREDIBILITY! If I know the post is written by a Squidoo lensmaster I'm familiar with I'm more likely to pay attention to the good advice given.

There have been times when I've gone to a blog to read what sounds like an insightful and helpful article, then found out I'm reading the work of a Squidoo lensmaster who has been on the site less than a month and is trying to sound like an authority. I do not want to waste time reading what this type of person has to say. When I have, I've found plenty of misinformation!

So lensmasters, help me out here! Put your lensmaster information at the top of your blog where it is easy for me to find.

The Beatles and eBay! ...Modules That Create Valuable Content

For most of the last month my top lens has been Vintage Beatles Albums - What Are They worth? I made the lens way back in June 2008 while Squidoo ran an "eBay Challenge". We were challenged to create a certain number of lenses using eBay modules. I didn't create enough to complete but did manage three lenses. The other two were Books for Authors and Benjamin Franklin Was a Vegetarian - neither of which have fared well in lenrank terms.

The Beatles albums lens also didn't do well for a long time but during the last few months it has been in tier one, dominating the top of my dashboard list. I consider it a 'fun' lens as it uses the eBay modules to provide the valuable content people want to find. The question is what Beatles albums currently sell for. Using eBay modules we can easily see current prices for multiple albums. I've listed all the Beatles albums that were released in the USA in the 1960s. I still own quite a few of these.

Today's auctions reveal an original-cover Yesterday and Today from 1965 with a current bid of $585.98! You may remember this as the "butcher's cover" that was replaced due to public outcry. (What were those Beatles thinking?) Of course, most vintage Beatles albums don't bring in that much money but seeing them valued in the hundreds isn't uncommon.

The final answer, of course, is that they're worth whatever you can get for them. Albums in mint condition will bring in better prices than those like mine that were played hundreds of times and scratched now and then.

So what keeps this lens at the top of my list? Right now the lensrank is 140. It isn't the traffic, I can tell you that. I have another lens with weekly traffic over 1000 and this one doesn't come close. I think it is the value of the eBay links and the number of click-outs I get as people look at the eBay pages to do their research. During the last few months there have been seven eBay sales.

I've added to the Family Rights niche

I've analyzed my success on Squidoo, and decided I need to add to one of my most popular niches, the Family Rights niche that I'm pretty much an expert at. You see, I've been an activist against CPS injustice toward families for more than twenty years now!

Today I made my fourth lens in the niche: Divorce, Separation, Child Custody, and Child Protective Services (CPS). This is a topic I've been mulling over for years, and one I often need to write about for people who leave comments on my Child Protective Services site, FightCPS. Now if anyone needs the information, I'll simply refer them to my new lens. The information is all there with interactive opportunities that Squidoo does so well at providing.

Squidoo Topic Top 100 Lists - Which Are Easiest To Break Into?

I've examined the top 100 list for every Squidoo topic category. I went to #100 in each list and looked at the overall lensrank, to see which top 100 lists would be easiest to break into.

Here's an example of how to use this information: By moving a lens from a category that has lenses under 2,000 lensrank, to one that has lenses under 10,000 lensrank, you might get more visibility for that lens. For instance, if your lens ranks 7000 in Business it won't show on the Business top 100 page - but if you move it to Work At Home - it will be in the top 100 there.

Content Writing - Immediate Payments for the Best Articles!

There's a new content writing site that promises immediate payments* for the best articles each day: Fortitude. So far I've made a few cents for reviewing articles. My friend who told me about the site has earned much more; she earned money when I joined - I'm not sure how much, but it was at least twelve dollars.

You see, we all pay for the privilege of being part of this site - that makes it an exclusive club of people who want to excel at content writing. The membership fee is equivalent to $1.99 monthly, but you pay for a year at a time. This keeps out people who simply want to post spam. Most likely only serious content writers will join.

My friend, the one I told you about a minute ago, submitted her first article; it was so highly rated it was at the top of the first page the day it was published. She was paid more than $15 for her article. She's earned back her membership fee already, after only a couple days!

Articles that are highly rated are published on the front page of the site. Submitting there is a bit of a gamble, but it is a great way to find out what people think of your writing ability! Front page articles earn at least $10; inside articles earn only $1.

I was so excited about this new site I made a lens about it - Fortitude - a new site for content writers.

Well, there are a few who make their money by revealing their secrets to profitable blogging. I've gathered leads to their information and tossed in some of my own on this lens about expert blogging advice.

This lens won a purple star a few weeks ago! (Big surprise for me!) I hope that means the information it contains is valuable and worth looking at.

Back to Lensmaking

After a brief stress break, I'm back to lensmaking. Fortunately, now that I've made over 100 of them, it comes easily. Could nearly be second nature by now!

I started back in by making a lens for the next Bigfoot book I'm planning to read and review on my blog, Bigfoot Sightings. The book is Bigfoot Sasquatch Evidence by Dr. Grover Krantz, an anthropologist who studied Bigfoot for many years.

That SquidLit lens was a pleasure to make and I resolved to make more in future months. Of course, I've made them before, but not as a specialty. Over the months I've found that my book lenses bring in good returns so I think it worth my while to make more of them.

My next new lens was about another book: Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass. I featured this book because I believe it is one of the best novel-writing books ever written.

A few days after that I had to make a lens to tell people about Deva Premal and her beautiful mantra singing. I learned about her only recently and totally fell in love with her CD, "Deva Premal Sings the Moola Mantra". I don't suppose anyone has found her through my lens yet but I hope people will, and that they'll love her singing as much as I do.

Next I made another SquidLit lens, Get High Now - about a book I learned about while listening to a favorite radio show. The author, James Nestor, wrote a fascinating book about things people do to alter consciousness without the use of illegal drugs. The book informs, explains, and suggests methods including breathing exercises, herbs (no, not THAT herb,) and meditation. Well, it is complex; he's found over 175 things to do that can relax, energize, or inspire. Fascinating!

Lastly, tonight I had a brainstorm. I created a lens to list my ten most recent lenses. With this lens linked on my profile page in the "Featured Lenses" section people can easily find out what I've been working on most recently. I thought this was such a good idea that I issued a challenge on SquidU for other lensmasters to make them: Quick Challenge: Your Ten Newest Lenses.

Squidoo Burnout?

Yes, how can it be? I've worked so hard on Squidoo the last couple months I felt compelled to take a vacation and try something new. I think it is a time of regeneration -- a chance to re-think my goals, destinations, the journey, the intent. So I backed off a bit. I'm suddenly able to get more Squidoo Angeling done, which is a cool thing. But I haven't made a lens in a couple of weeks.

How could this happen to me???

Instead I decided to get my amazing Bigfoot blog back on the road. I whipped it into shape and am now enjoying the fruits and especially new friends I've made through the blog, like Linda Newton-Perry who is now sending me her Bigfoot column once weekly to post on my blog. How very cool is that?

So, why the Bigfoot blog? Oh my goodness. I've always wanted to see a Bigfoot, but have never been so fortunate even though I live in the middle of a Northern California forest in what is supposed to be a hotbed of Bigfoot activity. I got curious a few years ago, as to whether or not this town has anything to brag about regarding Bigfoot. Yes, we've got Bigfoot statues, Bigfoot businesses, and an annual celebration called the Bigfoot Jamboree, but are there any real Bigfoot sightings hereabout? Well, back in 2005 I couldn't really say... but now I can!

I've written about a few of the local Bigfoot sightings and am researching others. I intend to put together a chapbook of Bigfoot sighting information for the locals by next year's Bigfoot Jamboree. Then I can get a table there and sell my chapbooks and hand out business cards, and hopefully get more sighting reports. Well, it's a plan.

I'll be back to writing for Squidoo soon. I need to back off, get my bearings, and re-evaluate. Refresh my spirit, then everything will come together when the time is right.

The first thing I did today was write a bio for the Rocket Moms blog, and even before 11 am Bonnie had already put it on the web! Check it out: Who is Linda (LindaJM)? I'm so pleased to be featured there!

After I watered the garden I wrote another article - this one, for Qondio. It is Inspiration Week there. I don't see it in the Qondio queue yet.. I submitted one yesterday and it is still waiting for five reviews before it can be publicly posted. As soon as it is, I'll add links here, there, everywhere.

A two article day! I think that's cool.

This week's big project is putting the finishing touches on the content writing promotion strategy I developed last week. I've got 2/3 of the work done. The final touch involves creating a form to keep track of my progress.

So many challenges, assignments, and new lenses!

I'm sure a lot of you have a similar problem. You want to be involved in some of the fascinating challenges going on around Squidoo, but it gets to be a bit much after a while. Can you identify?

For the last couple months I've been making lenses with the Rocket Moms, Giant Squids, and Senior Squids. I finished all my assignments except for two of the Senior Squid challenges. I'm struggling with one of those.

Consequently I have a lot of new lenses and am very happy about that. When Rocket Moms and Giant Squid Summer School ended on August 7, I breathed a sigh of relief and sort of melted like a lump of butter on a hot day. I just wanted to relax!

Then I found a cool article writing site I needed to explore: Qondio. I joined months ago when it was called Qassia, but never participated. I was probably still working at the pizza restaurant at the time -- and there's only so many things you can do when you're working outside the home. Even when I'm not working, I find it hard to get things done.

Today I posted my first "intel" at Qondio. It links back to my Lemon Balm lens, which is one of my first four herb lenses. My goal is to create an online herbal, so I expect to do many more herb lenses over the course of the next year or two.

This week I've been working on developing a new promotion strategy for my lenses. Right now I'm mainly promoting my black cats lens. August 12 has been named a special day for bringing awareness to less adoptable pets, and my entire point about writing on the topic of black cats was to point out that many people won't adopt them, and that they are in desperate need of homes.

Anyhow, I'm not going to sit here and link in all my new lenses. There were quite a few. I'm mainly just writing to let off steam about all the work I did to complete all the assignments and challenges... and to say how very grateful I am to be part of these motivating programs, and to have such a great group of Squidoo lensmasters to work with!

A Giant Squid 100 Hopeful

I've got seventy-seven lenses, several of which need massive updating or revision. And for some reason I think I might be able to make 23 more before the end of June! That would qualify me to be considered for the Giant 100 Club at Squidoo.

Please wish me luck!

Today I decided to also join the Giant Squids Challenge... I looked at all the Greeters lenses for this challenge and chose Rajay's Rocking Squids because he had the fewest members at that time, plus I looked at his lenses and was intrigued by his guru lenses... I'm planning to feature them on my lens, Gurus Online. Honestly, it was a hard decision re: which team to join because I like all those lensmasters very much!

I'd better get hopping... I have a lot of new lenses to make!

A clear case of blog neglect alleviated by positive action

I know, I know, I've been neglecting this blog. I took a vacation from Squidoo (blush) and finished revising one of my novels for the sixth time. Now it is finished... really FINISHED. I'm so excited about that.

My Squidoo statistics have not changed all that much from when I last posted to this blog a few months ago. How sad is that? I've still consistently got about seven or eight lenses in the top 2000, whereas I would like to double that (wouldn't everyone?)

More good news... I spent time today updating my Mountain Music lens, which has been re-named, Mountain Music Elevates The Soul. It currently has a lensrank of 75137. I'm now engaged in all sorts of promotional activities to see if I can get this lens to rank better on Squidoo. If I'm successful, I'll make a lens to tell you how I did it! I'm writing articles on Gather.Com. Today I've published Dissolving Barriers, a DVD by Louise Hay, and Coast to Coast AM - I will enjoy this new group.

I've published several new lenses this month... not as many as I wanted to publish, but I'm working on it. I've also thrown myself into the whirlpool of Squidoo Giant 100 hopefuls over at SquidU. Anyhow, I managed to create a second page for my Squidoo Diary, plus a lens to serve as a support site for my blog, Geniyyah Energy Healing. I also made an activist sort of lens about fluoride poisoning and a charity lens to help Palestinian children who have been injured in the war.

Updated Recently

I added a link to Sylvia Browne predictions to Predictions for 2009 through 2012 and beyond. I also added a couple links regarding children lost or injured in the recent Gaza war to Palestinian children.

This week I've been analyzing and reassessing a group of lenses at the other end of the spectrum, my least popular lenses. I'm using this time to figure out why certain lenses don't perform whereas others are instant hits.

I've also made a list of things that need to be done in the process of making a lens, and deleting some of those WIP lenses that I'm no longer enthusiastic about making, or that I recognize would just become more features in the above-mentioned list.

I must be in a creative mode, or the muse is visiting. Maybe just the joy of taking a break from NaNoWriMo after reaching 50K is inspiring me... but the fact is, I'm feeling much more motivated than usual to work on making new lenses. Last night I completed one I'm particularly fond of already: Content Is King! - Website Content Writing Tips for Squidoo, Your Website or Blog. I like the CSS I used for this page, and the colors, and the poster links. This is my first lens to use posters from allposters.com and I think they fit in well as illustrations for what is otherwise perhaps a tedious topic. I like the way I split the information using lists and small bites of text.

In my Squidoo dashboard I've created an "in progress" label with seven lenses that are half-way done. I'm planning to concentrate on those for a while to see if I can get any more of them on the road.

Something else I did last night - I rewrote parts of my Secret of the Andes by Ann Nolan Clark lens. It is a children's book lens that hasn't gotten much attention. The biggest problem was that I'd taken the content straight off a blog post I made a long time ago, so it was duplicate content. The blog post still shows as #5 for 'secret of the andes' in Google, but the lens didn't rank at all. Live and learn... now I know why duplicate content is a really bad idea. I'm changing not only the text, but the focus of the lens. It would surprise me to see it doing better since it has been a steady non-performer. With a little time and imagination I think I can make something happen. Time will tell.

My current stats pleased me this morning as I've got eight in the top 2000. I decided this is something worth recording in my blog!

Amazing how little gets written here when I'm busy doing a NaNoWriMo project.

This is my eighth year to write a novel, only this year I rebelled and decided to do something that isn't quite a novel. It is my autobiography. Technically this classifies me as a "NaNoRebel"... but I have good reason for choosing this deviant path.

You see, I've written seven NaNoNovels and they're all still waiting for revisions. I revised the first one five times, and it needs at least one more revision. Some of the others have never been revised, or even read. The last thing I need right now is another unrevised novel, so I am using the NaNoWriMo stiumulus to get my autobiography underway.

It is working. As of right now I've written almost 35,000 words and am only up to age thirteen. I'm fifty six, so I have a long way to go. I'm aiming at 3500 words nightly (yes, I ususally write at night) and am expecting to write at least 100K on the project by the end of the month.

My oldest daughter asked for this autobiography and I hope she's not disappointed by what she gets as I am working on being authentic and doing a lot of difficult, truthful writing.

I'm pleased to say I'm back in the saddle as far as lens creation goes. It was a slow month for me after the shock of losing my job, and then the week-long conference, but I finally feel balanced and serene, and I'm in that creative mode again.

I've got one lens nearly done and another that I created last night - King Of the Wind. This one is about a children's novel that won the Newbery Medal in 1949. It will be featured on my Newbery Award Winning Books lens next month. I've been featuring lenses made by other lensmasters (about Newbery Medal winning books) but I'm having a hard time finding more lenses on these books at this point so I will create them though honestly, they don't seem to bring in much money. They don't get that much public attention! I'm more likely to make money with Amazon sales than with high pagerank on all but a few of my children's literature lenses.

None-the-less, children's literature is a long-time interest of mine and I'll continue with making the lenses. I also believe that as I build a larger network of lenses on this topic, the traffic will increase. That certainly happened for my Newbery lenses. When I started there were very few takers, but now, I'm surprised at the popularity of the series. Putting that series together was hard work, and I'm not really totally done with implementing the original plan. I believe in the long run, focusing on this topic that I love will bring good results.

LindaJM's Squidoo Stats - October 23, 2008

After being blessed with the Giant Squid designation earlier this month, my life got busy in other directions. I was signed up to present a workshop at the Muse Online Writers Conference from October 13 to 19, and that took a lot of energy and focus until after mid-month.

I've chosen one other lensmaster to mentor for October. Basically we've set up a message board and are networking, and I'm reading through all her lenses looking for typos and what not. Making suggestions. But seriously, I think her lenses are already fantastic and I'm learning a lot from them. Fortunately they're on topics that interest me.

I hope to add another member to our network next month. Someone who isn't a Giant Squid yet who feels a need or desire for a little nurturing.

This week I'm paying a lot of attention to my blogs. I have two blogs that bring a lot of traffic to my Squidoo lenses, and I need to keep on top of those efforts. I have quite a few other blogs I'm nurturing along and writing articles for. Today I wrote about EFT for Melancholy. I have several other articles in the planning stage. The more I pump up my blogs, the more this will help my lenses. For example, this particular blog links to my EFT lens: EFT - Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Now that the Muse Online Writers Conference is over, I'm able to focus on other things, though I'm still doing critiques for the participants of the workshop I offered, Creating An Impressive Writing Website. I've also opened up a new forum for writers who want help and opinions while they're developing their websites: WriteWebNow.

My lens about To Kill A Mockingbird dipped from 4754 a few days ago to 16908 today, and I'd love to know why. I find that rather frustrating.

My new Squidoo focus is to work on promoting one lens at a time, as thoroughly as possible. Right now my promotion lens is Natural and Artificial Sweeteners... so I'll be doing that today plus rating at least ten to twenty lenses for other lensmasters.

LindaJM's Squidoo Stats - October 18, 2008

I've been busy this week, not only with my Muse Conference workshop, but also with learning to update my WordPress blogs. This involved also learning to restore a database!

My reason for suddenly needing to update my blog system was simple: a wretched hacker/spammer has been getting into my blogs, stealing the first posting, and posting spam, or nothing, just to be aggravating. I hope the new WordPress version will keep this person from raining on my parade. He's done it to quite a few of my blogs... I've even lost posts because of it - but I learned to backup every post on my hard drive as soon as I've written it. I've also learned to check my blogs every morning.

Anyhow, the good thing is that I can now update my blogs easily and without fear. Life just keeps getting better and better!

Sad to say, I've neglected my Squidoo lenses this week because of all this other excitement I've been experiencing, so my lensranks are falling. The Muse Conference will be over on Sunday so as of Monday I'll get back into Squidoo and updating all my lenses.

As I continually update my lenses and work on promotional issues, my lenses continue to improve in lensrank. Still I have nothing in the top 100, though Bigfoot Sightings wandered in there for a few days in September when there was a major news story (hoax) about Bigfoot. I think I just haven't found the right topics that people are avidly looking to read about. I'll keep trying.

This week I'm presenting my workshop at the 2008 Muse Online Writing Conference - and I'm getting a lot of interest in my topic, Creating An Impressive Writing Website. This is going to keep me very, very busy this week. So far, I'm enjoying it. I had to break the news about my week's distraction to my significant other this early afternoon. I think he finally got the picture when I showed him the conference message board with my featured workshop and messages pouring into it.

September was a weird month for me. First I got promoted to morning supervisor on September 8. Then I got fired on September 22. The evening supervisor never liked me and went on a badmouthing campaign against me as soon as I was promoted. I've been told she was already looking for someone to replace me on the day I was promoted!

This leaves me with a lot more time to work on my online income, and frankly, folks... I am so relieved not to have to go to work with that angry, negative person anymore! Also the work (7 hours on my feet daily) isn't missed all that much. :)

Back to my Squidoo lens creation program! I'm up to 51 lenses now!!!

In a moment of inspiration I flashed on the name of this new lens almost a year ago, but the lens was WIP for many months. I wondered if I'd ever be able to finish it. The work seemed almost beyond my ability. But I forged on and what you see is the result of a lot of meditation and trust. Yes, trust that I'd be able to understand the Tao Te Ching well enough to understand how it related to the topic of keywords and search engine optimization. Here's the result: The Tao of Keywords.

In Praise of the Squidoo Guestbook

I just updated a lens that praises the Squidoo Guestbook module and encourages lensmasters to use them when setting up their lenses.

I like guestbooks because I can sign and let lensmasters know I've been there, seen their lens, and appreciated it. Without the module, lensmasters have no idea who's been around checking things out.

Every lensmaster is invited to leave a link to their lenses that have guestbooks on them. Then others can go there and sign. Using the list on my guestbook lens makes it possible for me to surf only pages with guestbooks that I can sign.

Bigfoot Sightings

Bigfoot has been a long-time obsession of mine, mainly because I live in an area that is famous for having Bigfoot sightings. There are even reports of sightings that took place less than a mile of my home.

I wrote about those sightings on my Bigfoot Sightings lens on Squidoo.

I've also got a blog by the same name, Bigfoot Sightings. The blog gets over 200 visitors daily.

I love to go down to one of the local creeks and jump in, during the summer. It isn't warm enough yet, but soon will be. When it heats up, I'll be dipping in Indian Creek, Elk Creek, Clear Creek, and any other I can find. There are lots here, because I live in the center of the Klamath National Forest.

I recently created a Squidoo lens about Swimming Holes. It lists a few of my favorite swimming holes with photos, and asks you to tell us about swimming holes in your area. There are also books listed that tell about swimming holes in many regions.

Let's get wet!

Evacuation Planning

Last summer I had the shock of my life. I came home from a two-day trip to the coast and saw that a forest fire was burning on the hill right next to the one I live on. I live in the Klamath National Forest, and am used to forest fires. They happen every summer. But this was right next to my house, and I never saw one so close before this. It was less than a mile away.

Naturally I thought I was going to be evacuated at any time. I went to all the community meetings where we planned for evacuations, got forest service reports, and learned more about what to expect. After a scary couple of days, danger was averted... but I learned a lot about evacuation planning and now I'm sharing that information on Squidoo. Here's the link: Evacuation Planning.

Starting a Web Design Business

My newest lens is called Starting a Web Design Business. I made this lens to feature information related to my blog, Klamath Design - which is the blog that now occupies the space formerly used by my web design business.

You see, I'm an ex-webdesigner. I owned a web design business from 2002 to 2008, and decided to close it, giving myself time to do other things for a while. Now I keep the blog to let others who are thinking about starting a web design business the opportunity to learn more about web design and to get some questions answered.

My lens, Starting a Web Design Business, is part of that outreach effort of helping new and prospective web design business owners. I remember well how difficult it was for me to get started, so I believe having this information will save other business owners a lot of effort.
